Unique74 salutes SLY STONE | HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

MAVERICK < MUSIC | FUNK SUPREME
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SLY STONE!!
Guess who produced this number?
(proud owner of the 7inch on this jam..)

This next record has haunted me for years. The lead singer is still a mystery to this day..but it is clear as bell that the FAMILY STONE is holding down the rhthym section. Guess who produced this one? (whoever has the 7 inch to this.. you are BEYOND official, not easy to find. I am a proud owner of this and the MIGHTY JOE HICKS version on 7inch).
Guess who was the FIRST to use the talkbox? Which later influenced STEVIE, GUITAR WATSON, FRAMPTON, McCARTNEY, ERNIE ISLEY, TROUTMAN, etc. This was the theme music for the late great FRANKIE CROCKER “The Chief Rocker” (MY HERO!!) in his earlier years whenever he would “rap” on the radio. Stomp down Blues Funk at its finest!!
Update: Thank You Big Time Record Company for making small time moves by not exposing the music to fans on your artist roster..smart move..
Fans: the song is entitled “Sex Machine”…no not the James Brown version..it can be found on their 1969 release “Stand”
RARITIES >
“I Dont Know What The World Is Coming To” (1975) | Bobby Womack Sly provides background vocals. Put headphones on for it to really become clear, can be heard at the end near fade out.
“You Caught Me (Smiling)” (1971) | 7inch version | Sly and The Family Stone
Okay, for my “diggers” out there..you know where im going with this one..This is an alternate mix compared to the standard lp mix. The difference is that during the first bridge before the chorus, Sly lets out a huge JB-ish growl that can be only found on the 7 inch version.
Motown | The Golden Years {Dahl | McDougal III }
The Great Weldon McDougall III,
Musician, Producer, Former Label Exec for Motown/Philadelphia International states in his book that Sly and The Family Stone’s “STAND” lp was used as reference at Motown quality control meetings in search of direction for The Jackson 5 debut Lp “ABC” .
Funk Gets Stronger | Funkadelic | (1979)
Sly on the background vocals/talk box with Roger Troutman on Rhythm Guitar. A really feel good cut!!
Guess who is the proud owner of a skit with Sly + a live perfomance of “Family Affair” on The Tony Orlando Show (1977)?! Super Rare..Not even YOU TUBE can claim that one..

Sunday BBQ special double plate: Make It Last | The Stylistics | Let Life Flow | The O’Jays
As a kid, I use to sit and imagine blue water and soft winds on a humid nite in Morocco while listening to this song , I also had an urge to “fly the friendly skies” of Delta Airlines
. The layers and textures intertwine in unison with the harmonies, if heaven had a soundtrack..
Now this jam I always felt was a “cousin” to the last track, there is a striking similarity in the chorus of “Make It Last”..Eddie Sr. is clowning as always, while Walter and Sammy smooth it out. Wise words in this song..

He was the heartbeat behind the LA sound that shaped and molded many labels to come. A brainchild behind many projects and artists that created the foundation of LA’s music culture for many decades. A giant named Bob Keane has left the building..he will be greatly missed..Rest In Paradise.![bobhearse[1]](http://unique74mag.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/bobhearse1.jpg?w=497&h=507)

Sunday BBQ | The Isley Brothers | Midnight Sky (RARE Live ST Performance)
Ronald is lovin’ them maracas..lmao! Big Rudy got them claps to a science..Ernie was and will always be a pure BEAST (in my Post- Hendrix Top 5 Greatest Guitarist EVER next door to Eddie Hazel/Mike Hampton..Van Halen and Slash are decent..). What’s cool about this clip is that it’s the rarest of clips with all six brothers and The Great George Moreland on drums. They brought the amps and all..poor roadie..
Im STILL trying to find The Isleys Live @ Yankee Stadium (71′) DVD..I have the original vinyl (good luck finding it..super rare).
FREE RON (he deserves the Roman Polanski deal..)

Hank vs. Herbie
I had a chance to visit the Blake Edwards Art Exhibit a few months back and was left in amazement by various pieces created by the legendary writer/director.
There was one piece in particular that stood out and left me asking the question:
Does Blake Edwards listen to Herbie Hancock?

Mr Warren vs The Isley Bros
Lately, i’ve been thinking about The Mighty Isley Bros (Please Free Ron..) and their 72-79 period in which they truly raised the stakes in their sound without getting caught up in the Disco sensation (I LOVE DISCO). They remained true to their sound while constantly reinventing themselves and raising the bar.
The two songs featured are probably in my top 5 of Isley tunes. My big brother use to come in and blast the “Go For Your Guns” lp on 10 1/2 when I was a kid and I still hear that album the same way to this day.
I’ve been checking out Mr. Warren for about a year on YT and I am a huge fan. He literally breaks down The Isley Science! This is a man who truly has mastered the craft! One thing to always remember that you can tell when a MASTER is in the building, Mr Warren effortlessly breaks it down. Listen, Learn and Enjoy.
PS: I always thought “Climbing Up The Ladder” should have been a single, it would’ve been HUGE in the Rock market easily.
